Discussion Questions
Battle of Shiloh
How did the Battle of Shiloh change people's view of the Civil War?
Battle of Fredricksburg
The Confederacy won the Battle of Fredricksburg but General Lee felt afterwards depressed. He said, "At Fredericksburg we gained a battle, inflicting very severe loss on the enemy in men and material; our people were greatly elated—I was much depressed. We had really accomplished nothing; we had not gained a foot of ground, and I knew the enemy could easily replace the men he had lost."
How is war a conflict that requires more than winning battles?
Battle of Vicksburg/Gettysburg
How did the Navy help with this amphibious invasion?
Clara Barton
Clara is known for her nursing skills and the fact that she founded the American Red Cross. However, after the Civil War she and her friends helped locate more than twenty-two thousand missing men. In 1865 they found, identified and properly buried thirteen thousand soldiers who died at Andersonville. She continued her work for four more years burying twenty thousand additional soldiers and marking their graves.
How do her choices show her commitment to humanity? What other people have shown this kind of commitment?
