Week 32: Grover Cleveland and Immigration

Discussion Questions

Immigration

Between 1880 and 1920, 23 million immigrants arrived in the United States. Most were very poor and came for economic opportunities not available in their own country. They brought only what they could carry. Discuss what it would be like to leave everything you own behind to travel to a new country.

Research the journey of a family member who came from another country.

Can you shorten or change your name to make it easier to spell or say?

The Statue of Liberty

The Statue of Liberty was a gift from France to the United States. What does the torch symbolize?

Grover Cleveland

President Cleveland had no education beyond the basics. He was largely unfamiliar with the great ideas of history. In his mind, it was enough for him to be hard working, honest and independent.
Why is education important?
Why should a person have a vision statement that guides their decisions?
What qualities make a great leader?

Writing Funny Poetry

Couplets: A couplet is a two line poem where the last word of each phrase rhymes. To write one, you will need to research a topic and find some aspect of it that is funny. Then pare down the funny part to make a witty statement in tow lines.

Limericks: A limerick is a five line poem. Read some to see how funny they are! Here's a lesson plan to help kids write their own limerick

Activities

1. Print a black and white picture of the Statue of Liberty online and color it.
2. Continue a State Cards Project. As each state enters the union, create a card with fun facts about that state. Younger kids might enjoy a coloring/activity book about the states. Add North Dakota, South Dakota and Montana 1889.
